DXF to AutoCAD
DXF transfer to IBM based AutoCAD is accomplished in a two stage process : i) translation from Macintosh format to DOS format, and ii) import into AutoCAD. The first stage, translating between formats, may be done with either 3rd party translators such as DOS Mounter™ or MacInDos™, or with Apple File Exchange, a utility available with the Apple operating system. The Apple File Exchange utility (referred to hereafter as AFE) will translate the DXF file into a format readable by DOS. Start AFE, select the appropriate file, insert a DOS formatted disk, and then transfer the file to
disk.
The second stage involves bringing the file into the AutoCAD application. Transfer the file to the directory you wish to work in on your PC's hard disk. Start the AutoCAD application selecting option 1, 'New Drawing'. When naming the new file, place an '=' sign at the end of the file name(e.g.'Newfile1='). AutoCAD utilizes a file ACAD.DWG as a prototype drawing from which to generate file settings, layers, etc. The '=' sign disables this, and allows import of all DXF information; otherwise, only entity info will be processed, and the translation will fail. When the drawing file is opened, use the command 'DXFIN' to initiate the import process. You will be prompted for the DXF file name. Enter the file name and press <Enter>. The information will now be imported, and there will be a brief interval where the application will be busy with the task. When you have returned to the AutoCAD 'Command :' prompt, do a 'Zoom Extents' to expand the view to include your entire file.
